HELP!! Questions about Color, Limp Locs, and Shampoo/Conditioner

OK… I am giving in. I am now ready to color my hair. Any suggestions on brands? Any tips? Should I color before I get my next reti or should I wait until after? How many boxes? I don’t want to ‘lift’ my hair color by adding bleach so what brand will give me the most vibrance?

I am just tired of this dull shade of brown that I have been blessed with. I thought about going jet black to achieve the ‘full and thick’ effect.

Also, are any of you having issues with limp locs? Seems like some days my hair is just limp and the EO spritz I made doesn’t seem to help. I am still trying to find a shampoo and conditioner that will give my hair life and cleanse at the same time. I can’t use V05 or Suave too much because it causes my scalp to become dry. A friend of mine said that she likes the Jamaican Lime products, but I don’t know. Help…!!!

  1. Color - in my experience I tried coloring twice and the two shades of brown/red I tried nothing showed up until I lifted the dark black/brown I already had in. So....good luck. You can try henna but I know that even on loose natural hair it takes many, many applications before you see anything and you still won't have a lighter color. For those reasons I opted to just bleach and get it over with and then deal with any ramifications, which only thing I feel thus far is that it may have stunted my growth. Since I'm obsessed with growth I could be wrong!
In addition, I colored after a reti and if I had to do it over again I would have done it afterwards because my edges ended up fuzzy because of all the washing you do after the color to make sure its out.

Limp locs - yes somedays I feel like my hair has no zest no life just blah. I don't use a daily spritz but on those days I just pull them back or maybe put my hands under the faucet and pass them through my locks for some dampness. I then shake and go and pin a few locks off my face.

For shampoo/conditioner I'm still working it out with the SL products. Now I use the green tea shampoo which leaves a great tingle on my scalp and then I follow up with either the moisture treatment or the reconstructor since I've colored my locks. No issues to report on the usage of them.

  2. Hi Cshan,

As far as color goes I'm still waiting to color. But I would suggest doing it before your retight as well, that way if you knock anything loose you can take care of it during the reti. I experience limp locks too, some days more than others and I was thinking because my hair was dirty but the limp days are so random though I can't call it. Still learning my hair:) But I have to go with Gigglz on just passing some water through your locks. Thats seems to work for me too. As far shampoo is concerned, I have dabbled with Organix and the JML tingle shampoo they work fine but for the most part I use the SL shampoo and no conditioner but I do get Hot oil treatments when I get my retights and it always gives my hair that lustre and shine eventhough it's only temporary.

Good luck with whatever you decide!

  3. Kalia Dewdrop has great info on coloring on her blog. I don't think she mentioned anything about bleach but wears a red/brownish color that shows nicely.

Limp locs-mine only become limp when I need to shampoo my hair, which I do once a week. If you spritz your hair daily and it contains some type of oil then that would weigh your hair down as the weeks pass. Also with my locs, some seem limp. Like not as bouncy or wild as some others. What I have noticed is that the locs that are sealing at the end and becoming more firm lye down more that the locs that are not. Maybe just my head?

Shampoo/comditioner-I actually mix a concotion of Dr. Bronners castile soap, chamomille tea, rosemary, tea tree oil, and olive oil and use it to shampoo my hair. For a conditioner, I use a leave in (Carol's Daughter Black Vanilla). However, I'm gonna try the egg and mayo deep conditoner. If you haven't notice, most of the things I put onto my hair you can actually eat.

  4. Dye- I think going lighter is less healthy for hair because it has to be bleached to be beight (having said that my ends are reddish). Jet black is easy; I recommend Naturtint if you'd like to go darker.

For me heavy, limp locks mean it's time to wash my hair. I use clarifying shampoos that strip the hair. I don't know if this would be good for your scalp. I use Aveda Detox Shamppoo which you can by online through ebay sine Aveda discontinued it.

  6. Thanks everyone!!! I am going to give the coloring a try. I ended up buying SoftSheen-Carson Hi Rez Permanent Haircolor #43 Copper Shock, and #60 Amber Twist. I chose this because, outside of being in a hurry, this color system is supposed to be a one-stop shop for coloring dark hair. I could not find the right color that I wanted with the L'Oreal products. My reti is next week SO I decided to color this Saturday. I think afterwards I want to do a protein conditioner treatment by Tropic Isle (http://www.sams247.com/detail.aspx?ID=15685). I bought this stuff long time ago and never used it, so now is the time. I will update soon and thanks again everyone!

  7. Can someone please!!! help me. I'm losing my locs from the roots. I had gastric bypass surgery and one of the side affects is a loss of hair. I thought I had it under control vecause six months had passed with no problems...HA, I am no exception to the rule. I began losing them in Feb. and have been going strong since. I really don't want to cut them all off and start the process again so I'm looking for help anywhere I can. Anyone have any suggestions?
