What is it going to take to become a 'Red' head??

Why is it so hard for me to go ‘red’?

I have gone to get my hair dyed twice PROFESSIONALLY since I have had sisterlocks and I can't seem to get that 'red' going. Do you guys think I would need to have my hair lifted? I so don't want to do that. I went to get my hair dyed today and my stylist and I just KNEW we had the color we wanted… After being rinsed out, nothing compared to what we thought we would see. I am disappointed because it’s almost as if it’s not meant to be. We were BOTH stumped. So, for any of you who have dyed your hair, and it looks similar to the picture of my hair with the color application on AFTER being washed out, please tell me what you did. We are supposed to try it again on the 16th, but something is telling me that it might be too soon to do that. I don’t know. Help :(

  1. You going to have to lift the color, especially if you looking for the deep red color. Depending on how much of a lift you get will determine how red the color will turn out. I lifted my natural hair to a light brown color and then I dye it a rich auburn color (double process). I thought I would have achieved the same result, without lifting, with my sisterlocks, it didn't pan out. You can check out my blog (click on my image) and see the end result of a dye job I had. I won't lift my hair again so I decided I will just dye my hair straight black since I can't get the color I want without lifting it.

  2. UGG! I don't want to lift... I hear it can be sooo damaging. Oh well, no red for me then. My ends already feel a little dry. Definitely going to mositurize tonight. Thanks for the info Kreyola!

  3. Wait until 6 weeks to color again because if you color it too soon then your locs can become weak in the long run. What volume developer did she use? To give you an idea, I used 30 volume. when I colored my hair three weeks ago. 20-25vol. is found in most box colors, 30 vol. will definitely bleach the hair enough to deposit the color and 40 vol. is if you're going for that platinum blonde hair. Either way, the higher the volume the more damaging it can be on your hair if you don't care for it properly afterward. How exactly did she color your hair and what did she use? (Only if you know).

It's virtually impossible to get a lighter color unless you bleach or use some amount of peroxide in your hair. If you are doing this already then it's possible that your hair might be stubborn to taking color like mine is. My virgin hair will take color with no problem, but after that it's very resistant to taking other colors once i've dyed it. I'm not sure why, but it's been like this for as long as I can remember.

  4. I agree with dew drop. If you looking for this type of red. Check out the link > http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=137057862971252&set=o.93753458198&theater then you will need to lift. I ask her and she said that how she got that deep red.

  5. @dewdrop, I believe the color she used was ChromaSilk and I know for the test lock she used 20 and then 30 on another, but I don't think it was on long enough, and my hair seems to be a bit stubborn. I am not for certain. But as you advised, I will wait 6 weeks, and I may wait even longer because I just can't see lifting my hair. I want the red, but I don't want it that bad. I just can't do it as I am too afraid of the hair damage. I take pretty good care of my hair, but lifting is just not sitting easy with my spirit...LOL.

@Kreyola, thanks for the info. I will take a look, but it this point I will prob just have to do with what I have. It's not soo bad I guess. The parts that were auburn have a reddish tent to it. If I do anything, I will do the old school sun-in spray and go out in the sun...lol

  6. Hey Lady, i conversed with some of my fellow colorist and we all agreed that you will definitely have to lift:( I knew that, but i could sense your apprehension for lifting and brightness and because the ends were lighter i was trying to get a the best results with out lifting. I learned a valuable lesson, trust your gut and always have a client bring a picture of the exact red they want. There are a million reds out there...brown reds, orange reds, gold reds and more. Oh yeah, if your doing color correction, you can do it in two weeks(sometimes sooner depending on what volume), and if your doing a retouch on color you wait six weeks because that's how long it takes before you have enough new growth. The color line is Pravana Chromasilk. See u soon lady!! Hopefully one day we can get that red you want...when your ready:)

  7. Nneka, I am sooooo scared! My whole head would have to be lifted??? Hmmm, maybe I will just do streaks, or start out with several test locks… What do you think? I really want to do it, but I just don’t want to damage my locks. Ugh!!!! Decisions… decisions… That red we thought we had was ON POINT… I am thinking on it…
