Two Questions...

OK my dear locsters, if anyone has a really, and I mean REALLY good clarifying shampoo, please tell me. Since I work out and sweat A LOT in my head, I am wondering if that is what is contributing to my seemingly always dirty scalp. I never had this problem before my workout became so intense. I have tried my old reliables and it is not working for me.

Question two, what do you think would be a good shampoo to rinse paint out of locs? I am going to a HUGE paint party next weekend where they throw paint all over you and I just need to be prepared. The locks aren't getting under a swim cap. I guess I could try and find a really tight loc sock? Thoughts?

I keep saying I am going to do better about posting, but being newly married and working odd hours is just not allowing me to update like I want. Anyway, just checking in to say hello to you guys. Nothing has changed really other than my hair is growing. OH, that previous color test I went through actually worked out. The you can definitely see the red, not as bright, but in all honesty, it's actually just right. Can't really see it in the picture, but definitely up close and in the sun. Anywho, the journey continues!

It has been a min since I did a product review and mainly because I have been really going the simple route in regards to taking care of my locks. However, I have noticed that my locks have been terribly thirsty and my EOs were not working. I also recently colored my hair and I know the key is to make sure your locks get plenty of love and moisture. I wanted to try Dewdrops mayo-protein recipe, but I needed something that I could use on a daily basis.

So anyway, my hubby had Organic's Hair Mayo Leave In treatment in the bathroom, so I gave it a try. OMG... my dry and brittle ends that seemed to want to pop off are LOVING me now. My locks are feeling sooo much better. It is an instant repair and I just feel like they are alive. I also applied it to my scalp as well so that I could feed the new growth. It's a really lite liquid and it's not heavy AT ALL. It's not creamy and it's nothing you have to rub in or anything. It's as if the locks instantly soak up the solution. To apply, I just added a dab to my hand, and worked it from my roots to the end and just squeezed to make sure that my locks were saturated. I actually use this when I do the twist outs. My crinkles are holding and this is even after a workout. I even sat in the sauna. I figured using this in place of holding mousse would be much better, and it is. So far so good for me and have been using it for a week. Check it out and if you do, let me know what you guys think.

What is it going to take to become a 'Red' head??

Why is it so hard for me to go ‘red’?

I have gone to get my hair dyed twice PROFESSIONALLY since I have had sisterlocks and I can't seem to get that 'red' going. Do you guys think I would need to have my hair lifted? I so don't want to do that. I went to get my hair dyed today and my stylist and I just KNEW we had the color we wanted… After being rinsed out, nothing compared to what we thought we would see. I am disappointed because it’s almost as if it’s not meant to be. We were BOTH stumped. So, for any of you who have dyed your hair, and it looks similar to the picture of my hair with the color application on AFTER being washed out, please tell me what you did. We are supposed to try it again on the 16th, but something is telling me that it might be too soon to do that. I don’t know. Help :(

Nothing to report. Me and the boo took engagement photos today. It was SOOOO cold here in GA which is just CRAZY! I wanted to remove the coat, but uh, it feels like straight BRICK outside...The boo's eyes were running so bad because of the wind and well, that explains the squint... I am so anxious these days. My wedding day is coming up in February, and although I have everything taken care of, I still don't know how I am wearing my hair. Soooo, my stylist and I are going to play around with some styles each time I get my hair done. I am not even sure if I want the traditional veil. Where could I find some nice sisterlock updos to look at? I mean, I have looked all over. I guess I will combine different things I like from various styles to create the ultimate hair do.. Yeah, I know... I have been a stranger to my blog. All I have to say is that I am really happy with my locs. They are growing and I am just going with THEIR flow. I decided to that I would start 'oiling' my scalp like the old days, and man, what a difference! I know that some lockers won't use the old school oil, but I had to take measures in my own hands. Anyway, nothing else new, but I did get my hair done. I like.

Just dropping in to say hi. Had my 6 week reti Saturday and my loctitian decided to give me an updo. She is trying things out on my hair in prep for my wedding style. I like this one, but I was thinking I could add some curls in the top and intertwine vine in my hair. I dunno.

Well, actually... The only bad part was that I had so much slippage that it took my reti a whopping 6 HOURS!! It is what it is. Three extra hours for color... Hmmmm... Next time, I am letting a professional do it. Someone who works with locs. I won't be doing this on my own again. I am glad my loctian was able to repair them. When I color, I will go a tad bit lighter. You can't really see the color in the pics, but I do like it and it does add some zest to my locks.

Well... I did it... I dyed my hair. It's not to bright, and it's a change I suppose. I would like to see what it looks like once the sun hits it. Anyway... I did run into some problems. Problems that I wanted to avoid in the FIRST place, but it is what it is... So, here goes:

*Well, in my previous post, I posted a picture of some of my loose ends in the front. Well, they aren't so loose as they are bound together and kinda bunched. That's OK I guess because at least the hair is together. That's my way of rationalizing it I guess.

*My two-headed dragons now look like one lock. I thought about separating them, but then asked myself 'what's the point?' I guess all the color and washing bound those together too.

*My locks seemed to have shrunk a bit. I tried pulling them as best as I could, but I don't know. Seems like I lost some length.

*I had some slippage in various areas. This wasn't SO bad, and these were locks that were already in need of serious work and lucky for me my reti is on Friday. I hope my loctitian won't be too mad with me. I may have to pay her for extra time to fix the front portion of my locks.

Overall, I am not sure how I feel about what I just did. There is no easy fix for me as I don't know how to fix bunching and this has made me realize that I really need to consider taking the class. However, does the class teach you how to take locks down and re-install them? I don't think so.

Well, tomorrow is another day. I twisted and rolled my hair in lock loops and I hope the results give me some relief. I mean, my fiancé doesn't think it looks any differently, but it's my hair so I notice everything. Oh well.. My reti can't get here fast enough.

Loose hair

Do any of you have issues with the front section of your locks? What I mean is, since I pressed my hair so much, the front section suffered the most so the kink is basically loose at the ends. Then again, I wonder if it's due to the ends not being interlocked enough during my install. Point is, I am tired of looking at them, and while I have the cylindrical locks in the back, these just don't look uniformed. What do I do? Is this fixable? Should I keep doing as I have been doing and snip at the ends every so many months? They don't look as bad when I roll them, but when I want to free-style, well you can imagine my angst. These bad boys will never have the balls at the end, so I know for a fact they won't be locking.

HELP!! Questions about Color, Limp Locs, and Shampoo/Conditioner

OK… I am giving in. I am now ready to color my hair. Any suggestions on brands? Any tips? Should I color before I get my next reti or should I wait until after? How many boxes? I don’t want to ‘lift’ my hair color by adding bleach so what brand will give me the most vibrance?

I am just tired of this dull shade of brown that I have been blessed with. I thought about going jet black to achieve the ‘full and thick’ effect.

Also, are any of you having issues with limp locs? Seems like some days my hair is just limp and the EO spritz I made doesn’t seem to help. I am still trying to find a shampoo and conditioner that will give my hair life and cleanse at the same time. I can’t use V05 or Suave too much because it causes my scalp to become dry. A friend of mine said that she likes the Jamaican Lime products, but I don’t know. Help…!!!

I did it again. I slowed down on my blogging and I even missed my year anniversary (March 13th). Well, better late than never. It has now been a year, and I have to say, I am proud of what I have accomplished. There were a lot of times that I didn’t know if I was going to make it with theses SLs, but I DID! I can now say that I am in-love with them and I have a renewed appreciation for my beautiful babies. My hair is growing like crazy, the texture is changing, and I now know what my hair needs in order to be happy. My regimen is really simple, and I am free from the chemicals. I have not dyed my hair yet, and as of right now, I don’t have any plans to do so anytime soon. All and all, I am happy and I hope after this move to our new spot I can catch back up on my blogging. Anyway, here are some pictures I took TODAY after taking down the pipe cleaner curls I put in last night. I like the tight curl, but I need to learn the art of giving them the spiral look... Oh one more thing...ALL OF YOU ARE LOOKING AWESOME TOO! Keep it up!

Two Questions...

Two questions…

Question one: What’s the longest you guys have gone between retightenings? Initially, I was going every four weeks, now I am going every 6 weeks, and I am beginning to feel like I could go every 7 to 8 weeks based on the middle section of my head, but the front would def need to be done sooner.

The fact that I am not waiting longer to get my hair done, it has prompted me to learn to do my RETIs myself. I know some people took the class, and others have not. I definitely can’t afford it, especially with me trying to go to grad school. I need to save anyway I can. So that leads me to question two: For those of you who use the NL tool, and looked through the instructions, do you find it was easy to reti your hair? I know there are LOTS of Youtube vids out there. I am thinking of asking my stylist to show me how. At least I would be able to do my edges to start.

For those of you who took the class, how much was it? I have searched for a class in ATL and I didn’t see anything, but I could have been looking at something wrong or I could have overlooked it. I dunno, maybe I will try to save up for that too, but I am thinking of buying the NL tool.

*UPDATE* I did find the cost of the class. $@250, not bad, was it worth it??

You ever wish that you could have that smoothe look at the roots that traditionals have after a reti? I do. One of my BFFs has traditional locs and I swear everytime she has a reti I find myself becoming green with envy. It's so smoothe looking, and I know it has a lot to do with the method (I suppose). I just wish there was a way to achieve that same look. Obviously since my hair is being knitted (so to speak) it won't have the same look as palm-rolling. I mean, don't get me wrong, I can def tell the difference after a reti. My scalp is visble again and so forth. Still, I wish I could really tame these fly away hairs. It would be nice to be able to apply something to the loc. Just my rant.

... for not keeping up this blog. I have not been motivated, and I have been a bit busy. I cut all of the straight ends off so that took away from length, but it's all good. Out with the old and in with the new is what V said as she cut my ends. Anyway, I will do better in the upcoming months. Here is a picture I took this past Saturday. I have not been rolling it or anything lately. I am getting color in 2 months to celebrate my loc-a-versary! Anyway, update again soon... So, I curled the ends of the mohawk... Not feeling it. Won't do it again. After I went to work with this monstrosity, I IMMEDIATELY wet the ends to make the curls fall. Won't do that again... Not with sponge rollers, but maybe I will try pipe cleaners.

So, I had my 8 month reti over the weekend and asked my loctitian to show me how to do the mohawk style I had on my 7 month reti. Even though she was able to do the style in 5 minutes, it took me 30, and I still did it wrong so I decided next time I would take pictures.

The first step is to put your hair into 4 sections. You will need a section in the top, 1 section on each side of the head, and 1 in the middle towards the bottom.

Second, divide the side sections into 3 parts and then put each part into a rubberband. The key here is to put the parts as close as possible. Do this for both sides of your head.

The third step is to bring the bottom section that you parted off earlier up closer to the middle. Notice that the side parts are close to this section. The key is to eliminate as much space as possible.

The last couple of steps can be a little tricky. Remember that top section that you sectioned off? Well that section is the part that you will let hang free, however, you will need to section some of the front off into a small section.

Here is the finished look. I am going to roll the loose hair and I will post pictures of the finished look later.

Confronting my own issues...

As I read a Queen Nat’s blog and explanation as to why she cut her locks, it really made me ask myself if I was 100% satisfied with mine. This is a trick question for me, and I hesitate to answer it because I am only going 8 months compared to her several years. Still, some of the issues that she is having, fuzzy locks, loosing locs, and etc, I am experiencing as well. Albeit, I have only lost 3, but that is enough. I already knew before reading her blog that I was going to have my loctitioan combine my edges in the front on my next reti. I know this may distort my pattern, but I really don’t have concern for pattern if it’s going to keep me from having bare edges. There is really no getting around it, especially with the tension that is put on it by twisting and plaiting my hair.

Another thing that I am fighting with is the fact that I have these overly pressed ends that are never going to lock in the front. I won’t be cutting them anytime soon because that will leave me some short locs in the front. I am tired of the in between stage so I won’t be cutting them until I know I can put my hair in a pony tail even after they have been cut.

Sometimes, and this is just me being honest, I wonder if Sisterlocks was definitely the way for me to go. I only wonder this because of my hair type; I have really soft hair, and I have a coily curl pattern. With my hair not being coarse, I wonder if that is why I have the fuzzies or if this is just something that happens and will eventually go away. Sometimes I wonder if I should have gone the traditional route do to the fact that my cousins and friends with similar hair types have a tighter look with the traditional locks. Will my hair ever have the cylindrical look? Some of the locks in the back are getting there… I just wonder sometimes. OK… I am done with my venting…

Color before it's time??!!

So for all you ladies that dyed your hair before your locks were completely locked, do you regret it? Do you wish you had waited? I want some color BAD, but I can’t afford a bad mistake. I am getting tired of the dullness of my locks, and want to spice them up, but, I am reaaaally afraid. Thoughts??

So, the verdict is in, In a previous post, about Organix I told you guys about a new (well new to me) SLS-free shampoo and conditioner that I wanted to try. I like it a lot! I don't even have the white-bulbs! My hair is soft, it does not feel hard, and the smell...the smell makes me feel like I am on an island and I wish I was. My hair is soooo soft, but not so soft that it feels like my locs are going to unravel. I used just enough shampoo, did my thing, and used the conditioner after diluting it by putting it in my hands and mixing it with water and then applying it to my hair. I still don't do anything rigorous, but my hair is clean and it feels great. Before washing my hair, I did a search on 'Organix and Sisterlocks' and I found a lot of Slers love this product and I have not seen not ONE bad review. This is a winner for me.

...or maybe it's right on schedule... I just felt like taking some pictures of my hair, and I just noticed how fast my hair is really starting to grow. I just got a reti 2 weeks ago, and it already seems like it's time for another. I thought a while ago I would be able to go every 6 weeks, not gonna happen. These bad boys are growing and I think I like the new pattern. I get the 'full' effect even before I need a reti. The locs (in the back of course) are def getting thicker and I am getting that spongey feel that I like. MAN, I can't wait to see what a year will bring!!

Organix Shampoo and Conditioner

So as I was doing my weekly grocery shopping, I decided to see if I could find a good shampoo and conditioner for those days when I don't need a clarifying wash. I came across Organix, and it caught my eye since it is sulfate and paraben free. I have never been big on keeping away from SLS free products because I never saw the damage that it supposedly causes to your hair, but since I have SLs and I read a lot of the blogs, I am trying to become more educated on what I put on my hair, but sometimes it can still be hard to stay away from ALL things that are allegedly bad. Some things affect people differently. I recently read Bajan Lily's post about dry scalp, and it really got me to thinking about what to put in my hair and what not to put in my hair. I know that I use VO5's clarifying shampoo, and although I don't use it often, I do have dry scalp. Thing is, when I use it, my hair is CRAZY clean, but I don't want to risk stripping my scalp of the oils I need. Maybe I should use less? But honestly, I don't use a lot as it is. Hmmmm, maybe I could add a dab of EO to the shampoo??

I am hoping that I will have nice results with Organix especially since it is easy to find in my local Wal-mart, and it's not all that expensive. My goal is to find something simple to use. I am not big on having to have a whole bunch of different products to use on my hair, and that would defeat my the purpose of me getting SLs... I want my life to be simple, and my hair to be healthy. Moisture????

OK, so... can anyone tell me what they are using to moisturize their locs??? I am using a basic conditioner that I put in a spray bottle, diluted it with water, and then a touch of peppermint and tea tree oil. I am hoping this will do the trick, but I just don't want my locs getting toooo dry. I want them to lock and all, but a sista has limits!

Yes, I admit it, I have been gone for a while. That will change especially since my camera is back in commission. Anyhow, tomorrow marks 7 months for me. My hair is doing its thing, and I can see that ultimately I am going to have 'big' hair like I did when I wore my hair out. That is fine with me because I like it. My hair is healthy, I feel good about, and it is seriously growing even though I had those ends cut (may they rest in peace. Here are a few pics I just took. Hope you guys are doing wonderful!

I FINALLY got my camera issue resolved, so I am officially back in business. Usually I would post every reti, but not having a camera put a damper on my parade. Any who, just a quick pic to show. It's not the best picture as I have done nothing with it. Just showing how thick it is. My hair is doing its thing. I realize that my hair is getting back to the way it use to be before all of the pressing. I forgot just how thick my hair really is. I am happy for that because I really didn't want to have tiny locs, but I didn't want huge locks either. Definitely need to do something to it, and a nice grooming wouldn't hurt either. Until then...

Although I didn't get to actually hear the President’s speech, I did have an opportunity to read it (at just the right time I might add because I feel some kind of low), and I will say that this was a great message for adults of ALL walks of life. I really feel sorry for those individuals that have nothing better to do other than attack the leader of our country for trying to motivate our children. Some of these kids, and I bet a lot of kids, don't ever get to hear an encouraging word. Some parents don’t have time to even take 5 minutes out of their time because they are busy trying to make a living, put food on the table, keep the lights on, and so on. It's a really sad day. I read the speech in its entirety, and I could not find any cryptic messages at all.

Again…what's the big deal? I can' wait to hear/read the reasons. I am sure some bored individual(s) will twist it all up to find one. What is all the madness really about? Is it that loss from the election?? Stop being such a sore loser and chalk it up and support the message! The election is over… over…oveeeeeeer. I feel sorry for parents who actually TOOK THE TIME (finally, even though a lot of them don’t attend the PTAs) to take off work and keep their kids out of school, but yet you wonder why Timmy’s ass skipped school to go shop lifting and smoke out…ROCK ON DUDE! I guess what really makes me angry is that the state of affairs ‘at home’ is at an all time low. People are mentally, physically, and emotionally breaking down… IT IS HARD out here even if you have a job. It’s hard to look to the future and still believe what your parents use to tell you, “You can be whatever you want to be.” I am asking myself, really? It’s tough… I know I needed to hear/read the message. I need ALL THE ENCOURAGEMET I can get right now. Seems like a lot of time is being wasted, and I tell you this, I am all for freedom of speech, but I feel like Free Radio needs some checks and balances because these Rush Limbaugh’s and Sean Hannity’s of radio are really out of control. The real issues are not being talked about and it really grinds my gears. That’s my gripe for the day…

Are any of you experiencing bunched ends? If so, do you opt to keep them as they are, or do you try to correct them? I have read where some SLers embrace it and others try to fix it. What are your thoughts on that? Also, do you know what caused your ends to bunch? Initially, this was one of the reasons why I didn’t want to become a DIYer because I was not sure if I could remedy the situation, and I thought I would cause my hair to bunch or I would mess something up. I am going back and forth about learning now though. I don’t know….So many things to think about…

I have been trying to play it pretty safe with my Sisterlocks, and so far so good. Now that I am approaching the 6th month, I am becoming less scared about trying different things. Part of the reason for this new confidence is that I don’t really experience a lot of the horror stories that I read about prior to having Sisterlocks. My main concern was slippage. I did have some; like 7 locks in all the months that I have had locks, and they were basically in my kitchen. I did combine a couple along the edges, but that is perfectly natural. All in all, I have not had any real problems.

Since I have become more comfortable with my locks, I have started to explore different products, well really, different shampoos. I have never used the Sisterlock shampoo, and I didn’t wash my hair a whole lot mainly because I was trying not to over wash my hair to avoid slippage. I use Dr. Bronner’s when I need it, but I found something even better. The only reason I even started looking is because while on vacation, and not having a swim-cap, I got a lot of sand in my hair due to the fact that I was trying to sit pretty and wasn’t paying attention to the massive wave that was coming my way. Another story for another time…LOL. So anyway, since then, my hair has had a lot of build up and a lot of sand particles. Dr. Bronner was not cutting it AT ALL. I needed something fast; Labor Day weekend is coming and I do not have time to wait on shipping. So, what did I do? I did my research and read that a lot of fellow SL’ers opt to use a basic clarifying shampoo. Makes sense. So, I went to my local CVS, got the V05 Lime and Kiwi Clarifying Shampoo for 99 cents and I went to work. I must say that I was pleasantly surprised. My hair does not feel hard, my scalp is clean, no slippage, and the locs are bouncy. Can’t beat it. I also found that blow drying my locks helps to conceal those hideous white root balls. It’s like I don’t even see them. For a while, I had been simply rolling my hair while damp, now I blow dry and then roll. My hair turns out better this way too.

I really feel like I am on to something and I am happy that I am able to find things that work for me without costing me my first born! It’s not that I don’t want to spend the money, but it seems like the more I read blogs online, I am finding that a lot of SL’ers are finding products that work just as good without spending CRAZY amounts.

One thing that I will check out is the Nappy Locs Sea Salt spray OR I may just make my own. I was drawn to this since my hair seems to be doing even better since being drenched in the ocean water. Here is the product description:

A premium Sea Salt Spray with citrus essential oils and hyssop essential oil. Great for all hair types especially curly and straight types. Lightly spray locs and rub into hair. Hyssop is used in Ghana to remove excess oils and reduce the time it takes for locs to mature.

I am going in for my 5th reti tomorrow. My hair is REALLY starting to grow. Even though I keep it curled from rollers I can feel the new growth and my middle spot has filled in. The texture in the back is def changing. I will be glad when the front catches on. I see a lot of you are having a lot of growth as well. Ohh, and BIG UPS to Gigglz on becoming a DIYer... OK, so... I was going through some things, needed something new, and I was so damn, yep I said it, damn tired of my scraggly ends. I needed some shape, some freedom, and something sassy. I asked my loctitian to cut my hair, and when she started, of course I was acting like a punk, but I like it, and I am glad I got it over with. No more having 2 different textures; mind you, I pressed my hair so much, I had some straight ends, no perm. I will post pictures on how it looks after a wash. This is what it looks like after using sponge rollers.

when I get some more length. I am getting really tired of the sponge rollers. I mean, well not really, but sometimes I want to put my hair in a pony-tail and it ends up looking like a poon-tail because I have so much skrinkgage. I know, I know, it's apart of the process, BUT DANG! I want options NOW...LOL. My hair is seriously uneven in the middle and I have that breakage split in the crown, which is growing, but I have to constantly pat that area down. I have been so self-conscious about it. I mean, my hair will look soooo full on the side and in part of the front, but then I have to turn around and flatten the back. This was much easier when my hair was pressed out. But, I guess like everyone else I am going to have my good and bad days... I will be glad when I hit the one-year mark. I guess this would help if I knew how to braid my hair back myself. I don't. Oh well. Done being a big baby.

The Bunching Debate...

Are you ladies having issues with 'bunching'? I have read on so many blogs that bunching is not even a real problem and there is NO WAY to get around it. I feel like I have some bunching, but I am comparing my locs to others, and honestly, I don't mind it IF IN FACT I have it. I don't know. Should I be concerned because honestly I am not. Not even a little bit.

So lately I have been following the advice of my loctitian and not using ANY product on my hair. I have only washed it once this month, and I am now a fan of Dr. Bronner's Castile Almond Liquid soap. It's water based and it works PERFECTLY for me. My locs smell great, they feel clean, and I have not had any bad skin reactions to it. Since following her advice, I have noticed that my locs have become thicker, I am not experiencing any slippage, and the texture is changing. I have so much volume now! They are REALLY starting to loc and the locs that were once stringy have become some thick! I am happy and satisfied how my journey is progressing. You can definitely tell the difference between my 'overly pressed' and 'happy' hair. Those ends will be cut in a year or two. I will need to have the locs groomed soon to get rid of the fuzz, but I can live with it for now. Anyway, that is all I have to report. Happy Loc'ing!

LOL... that was for my sister and my sister from another mother. Previous posts were 'non-loc' related so I threw them for a loop. Anywho, this post is about how I aspire for my locs to be... kind of. My fam reunion was this weekend, and I got to see my cuzzo, who has locs, and sitting on her head is 9 years of beauty. They are traditional locs, but beautiful all the same. I will say that for a SPLIT second I wanted to combine mine because I loooove the way hers look, but then ironically, I saw a girl with Sisterlocks at the park, same length I want mine to be, and just the BOMB, plus, my loctitian's locs are the bomb, even though she keeps cutting it...LOL... Anyway, I just wanted to show a picture.

I am eternally grateful for being truthful to me and being able to just be 'me' regardless of what anyone else thinks. So, today is day two. Surprisingly, I am OK, and I don't feel the need to cheat. I know two days is not a lot, but when I tried Atkins before, it was a pain in the butt to make it through the first couple of hours because I knew that I could NOT have any chocolate. That is my downfall...yumny chocolate. I am doing great though. I have done the 14 day induction before, lost 10 pounds, but I did not stick with it as it was only because I was doing it to win a bet. This time, I am really committed. Since the first of the year I have become more active, there were some downs here and there, but I have been way better about it than I have ever been before. I have eliminated all excuses to NOT exercise by getting a stationary bike and I now have a Wii-Fit which is AWESOME. My goal is to lose 20 pounds. If I can lose more, that is great, but 20 pounds is great for me. I so miss being able to fit into my clothes. I tried doing the Weight Watchers plan, but time and time again, my body has proven to me that I just can't over do it with lots of carbs. This go round, my goal is to find out my carb threshold. I know that I will eventually introduce more carbs back into my diet, but for now, I want to give this all I have. Since I love to cook, I am being VERY creative with low-carb recipes. I am actually having fun with it and not over thinking the fact that I can't have sweets. Last night had a dream that I had a plate of junk and I was soooo upset. I am glad it was a dream because one bite of the wrong thing can throw off my ketosis. Any of you guys ever tried Atkins? Or any other dietary change? How are you doing?

My Sisterlock Report Card for the 3rd Month

V, my loctitian, said that my Sisterlocks looked good and that they were coming along just fine. We combined a couple of stragglers so I have some 2 headed dragons which is fine by me. I am going to start snipping the ends, the ones that have been pressed out so much that they are now straight, every time I get my locs retightened. I was going to wait for my year mark, but it would be toooo drastic for me to handle and this way I can do it little by little. I like that idea. Oh, I am also trying out this braid out thing... Post pictures tomorrow of the result...That's all to report for now.

Nothing much to say. Just some pictures of how my 3 month babies are looking. The 'spot' I have is really trying to fill in. My locs have gotten thicker. The first pic is from week 1 of my Sisterlocks. You can see that they were much thinner there. As I think on it...this post is a good post for anyone with doubts on whether or not their locs will thicken out. They will! I swore my loctitian made mine too small, but clearly she knew what she was doing.

I lost 2 locs from my edges. *Sigh*…The locs I talked about in a previous post...the very locs that were hanging on for dear life...they are no longer with me, but with me in spirit. I figure it was from rolling my hair too tight. I was actually not upset about it, although I hate that I did lose my babies, I am not upset. It’s just my ‘edges’ telling me to stop being so heavy handed. I have 2 others that are hanging on. I am going to ask my loctitian to combine them or repair them; whatever she thinks is best is fine by me. I took a picture and deleted it so I could quickly get it out of my head. I realize that I am learning and it’s all apart of the process.

...Funny how running into a fellow SL'er who has been at it for over 6 years will get you to see the light. No PRODUCTS the first year she said. Plain and simple. Her locs were, OMG, words can't describe, but I will just have to say BEAUTIFUL. I can do it. I tested out the sponge rollers without the mousse and it works just fine. Looser curl, but still pretty, and it still does what it needs to do. By this time next year, I hope to report that I am 90% locked. Well, I guess that's that....

Essential Oils, Moisture, and PreMature locs...Thoughts??

OK.... I have a question for any Fellow Sisterlocker, or Loc'er period, that happens to pop on my blog. How are you taking care of your new Sisterlocks/Locs OR how did you take care of your Sisterlocks/Locs in the first stages. This is the question I asked a fellow blogger:

I am just curious. My loctitian about kicked me through the phone about using ANY type of oils or moisture on my hair until it has gotten older. She said that moisture is not good for the locs because they are not mature and it will cause slippage. This came up because I was telling her that I have one in the front that feels like it wants to pop off. She described what it looked like as if she were here: more hair towards the end and it feels and looks like the loc is hanging by a string. She IMPLORED me not to use any oils right now and stated I should use Sea Breeze ONLY on the scalp if I have an itch. Needless to say I am FREAKED out about it because I have been doing a spritz here and there and I use a mouse with my rollers. Has your loctitian stated this? I have seen arguements on both sides. I must say, feeling through my hair, a couple of my locs do feel that way and I am not sure if it is new growth or what. How are yours holding up?

Thoughts? What are you guys going through if anything?

I totally 'slept' on Sponge Rollers

... I had been debating for some time to get the Caruso Steam Rollers, and I am glad I dusted off my sponge rollers and tried those first. Love it! Easy, no money to be spent...for now, and I got loads of compliments off of the style. The pics don't do the style justice in my opinion, and some may say "Well, what's so great about it?" Well, I can't tell you anything other than the fact I feel better as far as styling is concerned. I have the Lock Loops, but I am not a fan of that crazy bend that I get and I wanted something more uniformed. Maybe it's the way I had been rolling my hair, but even after my loctitan rolls my hair, it's still the same result. I admit, I was inlove with them at first, but something was just missing for me. I love this look and I think it's because right now I am in that 'in-between' stage with my locs and I have major shrinkage. That's fine because these sponge rollers are doing what they need to do for me. Why did I not think of this before?? I never had use for the tiny rollers, but they came in sooooo handy when it came to rolling my edges and short locs in the back. I love it....

Caruso Steam Curlers

I am officially going to invest in the Caruso Curlers. I need something else, another style, something... I could free-style it, but I miss having some kind of curl or shape, and the Lock Loops produce such a tight curl. I am ready to wear my hair down more but my hair is sooo uneven in the back. I am opting out of puting a curling iron to my locs. How do you ladies like the Caruso's if you have them? I have seen so many diff takes on them. Well, the flat hair doesn't look so bad here...just hanging... I guess.

Anyway, not much has changed EXCEPT for the fact that my loctitian, who I LOVE SOO MUCH, was able to grab and loc my middle section that use to be tooo small to grab. Since starting my journey to Sisterlocks, I have constantly searched and searched for different ways people have started their locs be it ALL natural, permed, permanently pressed ends, and so on. I use to kick myself in the butt when I would see people who started with the same kinky hair I use to have. I, like many people, fell into the pressing trap and I paid for it, sort of. Some of my strands are all straight, some are not, some are just right. This of course caused me to have a bit of what they call 'loc-envy' because my hair is not as THICK as it use to be. Not the ends anyway. Well, what's done is done, and lately I am finding more and more people who started the same way I did. My middle section is doing what I want it to do. Now time for the front to follow...

I finally took pictures after my first retightening. I did not think my locs had changed, but clearly they have. I hope that breakage spot in my crown fills in. It seems like it wants to. I should note that my hair is parted just so you can see the 'spot' I am talking about. It's not easily seen once I pull my hair back, and my hair has been rolled in rods and misted with water. I want it to grow like in a hurry! Patience, patience, patience.

This is definitely a test of patience on my end because I have not washed my hair in almost a month, and I am also a victim of hair breakage in the crown that you can’t even really see, and this area happens to be my stress spot, so of course it ITCHES like crazy. For all you folks who suffer from hair breakage, I feel your pain, but without a doubt this has been the best thing that I could have done to promote hair growth because even after the BC 5 years ago, all of my hair grew back EXCEPT this area. Crazy-weird, I know, and not one of the 3 dermatologists could tell me anything other than “The scalp looks healthy, nothing is wrong, now get out!” Well they didn’t say the last part, but they may as well have said it since I was only in there less than 15 minutes and that is not including my wait time.

Anyway, I am so ready to get my hair retightened. I am looking forward to my loctitian washing my hair. Since the weather has been funky here in Atlanta; raining one day, cold the next, I have been taking advantage,walking in the rain ,and letting the cool water touch my scalp. That is just a treat to me! I never appreciated rain until now. The only product that I have been using is Taliah Waajid Moisture Clenz and that is because I have been crazy strict; no essential oils, washing, nothing! I want to avoid slippage if at all possible and so far so good!

I have become obssesed with my hair. What fellow SLocker hasn't? I still love that I made the choice to get SLs, BUT now that I have them, I wish that I would have NEVER gotten my hair pressed soooo many times. I do not have a perm, but I have to treat the 'pressed' ends as such. I thought, 'OK, I don't have a perm, so I am still natural... Riiight, well my hair is no longer as thick or kinky as it used to be so I am having to go through the motions. Not only that, my hair is uneven so I don't wear it down just yet. I wish I had not pressed my hair :( Oh well, it takes time to heal so the journey continues....

Finally got the SLs installed!

OK, it is now March 17, 2009, and I have officially had my Sisterlocks for 2 days. It took a period of 3 days, and it was well worth the wait. Like everyone else with SLs, I love them. The ONLY thing I don’t like is the waiting period that I have to go through towards them being thicker, and covering the spaces of the parts. I am going to try not to wash them for as long as I can to prevent slippage and to help them loc faster, but I have to keep it moisturized so hopefully I won’t get all that unsightly build up.

I wish I had discovered this new ‘freedom’ a long time ago, but instead I kept pressing my natural hair. I am feeling the pain now because a lot of my ends, more than I thought actually, are particularly straight. I am not going to worry about it though because at this juncture it is what it is, and I have nothing but time, and in time my hair will return back to its natural thickness and curls. Other than that, I know I made the best decision, and pretty soon I will have lengthy SLs because at least I can say my hair grows like grass.

On a side note, I am also going to start taking better care of my body internally. I have taken the first steps to taking better care of my hair, now I need to include my temple. Valencia, my SL sister and loctitian, spoke with me about how she is using a juicer to curb her sweet tooth and help with overall health. It’s really not a bad idea, and I could use more vitamins and minerals in my diet. Let me also say that I was blessed to meet Valencia in so many ways. We have a wonderful connection and I agree with her in that it is important to have a good vibe with the person who is in your hair, especially for 3 days!
